XSD datatype

xs:byte

A signed 8-bit integer from −128 to 127 — not an arbitrary octet value.

xs:byte is signed. That surprises developers whose platform calls 0–255 a byte; the XSD type for that range is xs:unsignedByte.

What validates

Every literal below is put through the schema validator on each test run, against the schema at the foot of this page.

  • 0
  • 127
  • -128

What does not

  • 128

    One past the signed maximum.

  • -129

    One past the signed minimum.

What catches people out

  • xs:byte is signed; xs:unsignedByte is 0–255.
  • It is a numeric value, not a single byte of encoded text.
  • A decimal point is never allowed in an integer lexical form.

The schema used

This is the exact schema the literals above are validated against. Paste it into the validator with one of them to see the result yourself.

schema.xsd
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<xs:schema xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">
  <xs:element name="v" type="xs:byte"/>
</xs:schema>
